Contaminant Candidate List Viruses: Evaluation of Disinfection Efficacy

چکیده

BACKGROUND: The current standards for chlorine and monochloramine disinfection of drinking water were established using information obtained from bench-scale disinfection experiments of monodispersed hepatitis A virus. It is not clear whether these standards are sufficient for the four virus types listed on the CCL2. Several disinfection studies have been conducted on representative coxsackieviruses and echoviruses, but much less is known about adenoviruses and caliciviruses. No previous study has investigated this suite of virus types under the same disinfection conditions. Further, there is a lack of comprehensive information regarding the disinfection efficacy of chlorine and monochloramine in source drinking water. Lastly, few studies have attempted to examine disinfection of aggregated viruses.

Public health concerns about caliciviruses as waterborne contaminants.

Caliciviruses are disseminated by the fecal-oral route and are found in contaminated surface and ground waters. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is interested in preventing calicivirus contamination in treated waters used for consumption, and these viruses are on the EPA's "contaminant candidate list" for regulatory consideration in drinking waters. These viruses also present a heal...

Effects of source water quality on chlorine inactivation of adenovirus, coxsackievirus, echovirus, and murine norovirus.

More information is needed on the disinfection efficacy of chlorine for viruses in source water. In this study, chlorine disinfection efficacy was investigated for USEPA Contaminant Candidate List viruses coxsackievirus B5 (CVB5), echovirus 1 (E1), murine norovirus (MNV), and human adenovirus 2 (HAdV2) in one untreated groundwater source and two partially treated surface waters. Disinfection ex...

The Removal of N-Nitrosodimethylamine Formation Potential in Drinking Water Treatment Plants

Nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) are far more cytotoxic and genotoxic than carbonaceous DBPs (Plewa & Wagner 2009). Among the N-DBPs, nitrosamines have been shown to be probable human carcinogens associated with 10–6 lifetime cancer risk at ng/L levels (USEPA 2002). An increasing number of water treatment plants (WTPs) in the United States have been using or considering chloraminat...
